A continuing snow storm has closed Mauna Kea Access Road.

A continuing snow storm has closed Mauna Kea Access Road.

The road closed early this morning at the Visitor Information Station and the closure is still in effect.

In the last hour or so, Mauna Kea was blanketed with 1 to 3 inches of fresh snow. There were also snow drifts up to 8 inches deep on the summit, rangers said in a message posted at 9 a.m. today.

This road is typically closed when the pavement has ice or snow, the morning after a snowfall, and while snow removal equipment is in operation. The public is advised to check the status of the road, the current weather and forecast for Mauna Kea before visiting the mountain.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. today for Big Island summits, including Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Forecasters are anticipating up to 2 inches of snow in the affected areas, particularly above the 8,000-foot elevation.

A winter weather advisory means periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause hazardous driving conditions and travel difficulties. Motorists in the affected areas should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility, as well as use caution while driving.
